An ongoing collaborative project by artists Ella Grace Paterson and Jake Dempsey, exploring translation, intuition and the space between image and gesture.

Paterson creates a purpose-made film, which Dempsey encounters without access to its source material. Responding intuitively, he paints directly in relation to the moving image while Paterson documents the process.

The resulting film, painting and documentation are presented as an installation triptych, tracing a chain of interpretation between two artists and three forms.

The first iteration of the project takes its conceptual departure from the following poem by Paterson:

Before/Body

Before there was something to hold onto there was nothing

Before there was nothing there was everything

Before steel was skin

Before skin was energy

Before energy came the wind

Before the wind there was love contrition 

And before this were our lungs
